Most sellers in Ghana start on Instagram, and that is the right place to start. It is free, everyone is already there, and a good photo can reach people who have never heard of you.

The question is not whether to leave Instagram. You should not. The question is whether Instagram alone is costing you sales you never find out about.

What Instagram Does Well

It brings you people. This is the big one. A store on its own has no visitors. Instagram puts your products in front of strangers for free.

It is free. No monthly fee.

People trust faces. Showing yourself, your packing, your deliveries builds trust faster than any website.

It is easy. Post a photo, write a caption, done.

Nothing below changes any of that. Instagram is where attention lives, and attention is the hardest thing to buy.

Where Instagram Costs You Sales

You repeat yourself all day. How much, do you have my size, where are you located, how much is delivery. The same answers, twenty times, typed by hand.

"DM for price" loses buyers. Every extra step loses people. Someone scrolling at night who has to message you and wait until morning has usually moved on by then. The ones who buy are the ones who could see the price.

You cannot count your stock. Selling something you already sold is embarrassing, and it happens often.

You have no record of orders. Scrolling back through DMs to find what someone ordered last week is not a system.

You only sell while you are awake. Every single sale needs you present and typing. That is a hard limit on how much one person can sell.

You cannot take payment properly. MoMo number in a chat, screenshot, hope it is real.

The list is not yours. Your followers belong to Instagram. You cannot export them, and you cannot reliably reach them.

The Risk Nobody Plans For

Instagram accounts get hacked. They get reported and disabled, sometimes for nothing you did. Recovering one is slow and often does not work.

If your whole business lives in that account, losing it means losing your shop, your photos, your customer conversations and your income at the same time.

A store you control is not affected by that. Your products, orders and customer list stay yours.

This is the single strongest argument for having somewhere else, even if Instagram is still where you find people.

You Do Not Have to Choose

This is the part people get wrong. It is not Instagram or a store. The two do different jobs.

Instagram finds people. It is the shop window and the crowd walking past.

A store sells to them. It is the counter, the prices, the checkout and the receipt.

The sellers who grow keep posting on Instagram exactly as before. They just stop making Instagram do the parts it is bad at.

In practice that means your bio has a link. Someone sees a product, taps the link, sees every item with a real price, chooses, and pays by mobile money or card or on delivery. You get an order with a record, and your stock updates itself.

You still post. You still reply to DMs. You just stop typing prices twenty times a day.

What Changes When You Add a Store

People buy at night. Sales happen while you sleep, because nobody needs you to answer first.

You stop repeating prices. The link answers the question before it is asked.

You know what you have. Stock counts itself down as orders come in.

You get paid properly. Mobile money, card, or payment on delivery, with a real confirmation instead of a screenshot you have to trust.

You keep your customers. A list of everyone who has bought from you, that belongs to you. On Strawlo you can message all of them from your own number with WhatsApp broadcast when you restock.

You look established. A real store link changes how a stranger judges whether to send you money.

You learn what sells. Real numbers on your best products, instead of a feeling.

What It Costs

Instagram is free and stays free. You should keep using it.

A Strawlo store is GHS 60 a month on the Business plan, which covers 50 products, your own domain, mobile money and card payments, payment on delivery, stock and orders, and WhatsApp broadcast. Business+ is GHS 150 for unlimited products and up to three stores.

Strawlo takes 0% of your sales. Paystack is the payment processor, the company that moves the money from your customer's wallet or card into your bank account, and its 1.95% pays for that. It is not a Strawlo cut.

One extra sale a month usually covers the fee. Most sellers find the bigger gain is the hours they stop spending in the DMs.

When Instagram Alone Is Enough

To be fair, sometimes it is.

You sell very few items. A handful of products you can keep in your head.

You make to order. Custom work where every order is a conversation anyway.

You are still testing. Not sure what you are selling yet, so do not pay for anything.

Selling is a side thing. A few sales a month, no pressure to grow.

If that is you, stay on Instagram and come back when the DMs start to hurt.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I stop using Instagram if I get a store?

No. Instagram is how people find you. Keep posting exactly as you do now, and put your store link in your bio.

Will people actually click the link?

The ones who were going to buy will. The link removes the wait, and buyers who would have given up because you were asleep can now pay immediately.

Is it worth GHS 60 a month for a small shop?

If you make more than about one extra sale a month because of it, yes. The time saved on repeating prices is usually worth more than the fee.

What about Instagram Shopping?

It helps people browse, but payment and delivery still come back to you in the DMs, and your customer list still belongs to Instagram. It does not solve the record keeping or the account risk.

Can I move my Instagram photos into a store?

Yes. Strawlo Business+ includes Instagram import, which pulls your posts across so you are not starting from nothing.

What if I mostly sell in WhatsApp, not Instagram?

Same idea. Our guide on how to sell on WhatsApp in Ghana covers that setup, including where WhatsApp alone starts costing you sales.

A Simple Test

Count how many times this week you typed a price into a DM.

Multiply that by the minutes it took. Then think about the people who asked and never replied, because they got an answer too late or had to wait.

That is what Instagram alone costs. Try Strawlo free for 7 days, put the link in your bio, and see what happens to your evenings.
